Rare Vintage Peterson Giant Smooth Bent P-Lip Pipe. Made in mid-1970s Era – Very Nice! This is a rare vintage Peterson Giant Smooth pipe, probably made about 1974, and it’s in very nice to excellent condition. This is a Speciality Pipe (sometimes to referred to as an XXL) that was made in limited numbers. This one has the arched “Petersons” (with the forked tail) over “Dublin” on the shank’s left side. The right side has the imprint Made in the Republic of Ireland. Look at the amazing circular grain pattern on the lower right side of the bowl – it’s amazing. There are dozens of tiny birdseye marks ascross the bowl and stem – please see photos for detail. This is a powerfully beautiful pipe. It’s been lovingly cared for and is clean and polished – with very little tobacco odor. And, have we mentioned, this PIPE IS HUGE!!! It’s more than 7-1/2 inches long! Bowl height is 2.5 inches. Chamber depth is 2.1 inches. You’ll need a long, long time to smoke this baby if you fill it up. Perfect for taking with you to the Pub or spending a quiet time! The surface condition is exceptional. Few, if any, surface marks. There’s a tiny scuff/ding near the imprint on the right side. Another rarity is that this pipe had the P-Lip stem, rather than the fishtail. The stem is free of chatter or scratches and just shines! The Peterson “P” imprint is easily visible, however the “fill” paint is missing. In the last photos this pipe is placed next to a Peterson XL16 Kinsale pipe (a large pipe) to show comparison in size. The XL16 is not included in this sale, it is there for size comparison only. Max Rimensi, the craftsman behind Il Duca pipes, is renowned for his versatility in adapting various design philosophies, infusing traditional forms with a modern flair through choice of stem material, design accents, and overall aesthetics. A hallmark interpretation from Rimensi, this particular Cherrywood style is one we’ve encountered several times. Every instance reaffirms the uniform excellence of his craftsmanship, especially in maintaining the shape’s fluid dynamism. This piece features a notably elongated stem, distinguished by its vertical alignment and subtle bend, harmoniously counterpoised by an upturned shank. The shank expands from a broad transition, culminating in a stummel of bamboo just before it joins the stem. The following has been applied to this pipe. Reamed out carbon cake. Excellent GBD Meerschaum lined Billiard Model/shape#: 9435. What a wonderful English piece with a hand cut rubber stem! Nice clean flat rim and solid clay bowl. The rim does have some minor dinging from tray tapping and needed love from a lot of char. Other than that, he is mostly ding free and smooth as glass. The chamber was pretty clean to begin with so very little sanding was needed to even up. Tons of birds-eye on both sides of this guy! He presents very well in a nicely aged amber finish resembling a Root Briar from Dunhill. The classic pre-1981 Comoy’s era brass roundel shines up on the stem proudly but was slightly mis-punched/set so the bottom edge had a little brass sliver and gap I filled with rubberized compound and smoothed out to flush into the black better. This is a hand cut stem and I spent A LOT of time trying to keep the flat edges sharp during de-ox sanding. It sets in nice and snug with no issues. Stamping is sharp, even, and like new. Last pic is from previous condition and of stem logo issue. Measurements: 5 7/8″ long, 1 7/8″ tall, 1 1/2″ wide, 3/4″ bowl opening, and 1 5/8 bowl depth. Weight: 1.46oz or 41.4g. I know you have a lot of options here at the Bay. I thank you for your consideration! Recondition included wet sanded, and polished stem. Draft hole drilled out at 9/64. Lightly sanded inside chamber to round out. Rim topped to even out slight char damage. Buffed out and hand rubbed and sealed with Paragon wax for preservation and easier cleaning. This pipe will be thoroughly clean and safe for your enjoyment. Please don’t be offended if I refuse an offer. I spend countless hours on each of these pipes making sure that my customers have an heirloom piece they can enjoy for years to come. There will likely be imperfections from years of use but I try to bring them as close to new as possible with my current skill set. I also like to exercise a little creative liberty to give some pieces a unique personality!
