This Group 2 iteration of Dunhill’s “01” straight Apple is a pleasantly plump, balanced take on the traditional form with the bowl’s breadth almost identical to its height. Enough chamber tucked away inside to ensure a respectably lengthy, relaxing smoke. Aesthetically, this example is also one of the most gorgeous pieces I’ve personally come across from the legendary English marque. I already have a soft spot for shape-chart standards and to see one of such convenient, elegant size dressed in the dark, consistent palette of the Chestnut series really grabbed my attention. A sibling to the Cumberland, Dunhill’s Chestnut finish was inaugurated in 1983 to commemorate the closing of the Cumberland Rd. Warehouse for which the Cumberland finish was named. Like the Cumberland, pipes in the Chestnut line wear the same dark, smoky stain and are fitted to stems of cumberland but feature a silky smooth, glossy finish compared to the Cumberland’s.
