1965 DUNHILL BRUYERE 249 GROUP 1 (A) SMOKIG ESTATE BRIAR PIPE VINTAGE ENGLAND5. A trim, lightweight Billiard, this Dunhill “249” is rendered in Group 1 proportions and is a thoroughly traditional take on the shape chart standard. The bowl is perched on the end of the slender, arrow straight shank and stem combination, the mouthpiece considerably longer than the shank. Crafted back in 1965, this piece is handsomely finished in the vibrant, ruby-hued stain of the Bruyere finish, with streaks of cross grain along the bowl’s fore and aft and specks of birdseye along the flanks. The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill’s original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless. The cross grain pattern on the briar shows a SPECTACULAR birdseye on both sides of the bowl, It is beautiful! The stem shows NO MARKINGS.
