Every pipe Ian Walker creates is based on the grain, shape and size of the briar, giving each pipe its own unique quality. Ian is a third generation pipe maker and been involved in pipe making since he was a young boy. With his vast experience and attention to detail Ian’s Northern Briar pipes offer the smoker the chance to own a piece of classic English manufacture without the production line attitude found with many legacy UK factories. Ever pipe is made from Mediterranean briar and using German rods for Vulcanite & acrylic stems. Each pipe is totally hand made by Ian Walker and all have hand cut stems. Bill Taylor says that Ian does the best stem work in England. His pipes are in the best tradition of classic British pipe making. An interesting aside is that Ian lives with his wife Katerina on a canal boat. His work shop is on the boat. Under British law he can only be moored at one spot for two weeks. So every fortnight Ian moves his house and workshop to a new location on a canal or river in the England. This is one of the finest Northern Briars I’ve owned or even seen! 1996 DUNHILL CHESTNUT 2101 ESTATE SMOKING BRIAR PIPE VINTAGE ENGLAND36 MINT! 27 Years Old Pipe. This Group 2 iteration of Dunhill’s “01” straight Apple is a pleasantly plump, balanced take on the traditional form with the bowl’s breadth almost identical to its height. Enough chamber tucked away inside to ensure a respectably lengthy, relaxing smoke. Aesthetically, this example is also one of the most gorgeous pieces I’ve personally come across from the legendary English marque. I already have a soft spot for shape-chart standards and to see one of such convenient, elegant size dressed in the dark, consistent palette of the Chestnut series really grabbed my attention. A sibling to the Cumberland, Dunhill’s Chestnut finish was inaugurated in 1983 to commemorate the closing of the Cumberland Rd. Warehouse for which the Cumberland finish was named. Like the Cumberland, pipes in the Chestnut line wear the same dark, smoky stain and are fitted to stems of cumberland but feature a silky smooth, glossy finish compared to the Cumberland’s. Giorgio Imperatori, an architect, had a passion for pipes, and in 1978 began to design and make Il Ceppo. Always considered a good value and very good for smoking, 1995 Franco Rossi joined the firm. He brought with him a true elegance of design and a unique flair that now helps Il Ceppo stand apart. 2018 ARDOR Giove ITALIAN ESTATE SMOKING BRIAR PIPE Billiard MINT W/BOX & SOCK! Estate, Ardor, Giove, 2018, Fatta a Mano, Lightweight. Billiard shape , handmade pipe! Look at this beautiful grain! This one is awesome. Small size, weight only 24g. Gently smoked, well balanced, a masterpiece by the famous Italian brand, Ardor. WITH BOX AND SOCK! Personally, I like a LOT this brand. The high quality Briar made this pipe an EXCELLENT and awesome smoker! Internal Chamber Diameter: 18 mm. Internal Height Chamber: 37 mm. External Bowl Height: 42 mm. In 1974 Dorelio Rovera, with his father Angelo, established the Ardor Pipe, name which comes from the “AR” (Angelo Rovera) and “DOR” (Dorelio Rovera), changing a medium quality level production into a completely handcrafted product, with a very high level of design and finishing. Angelo Rovera is the son of Francesco Rovera, who along with his brothers comprised Sociedade Rovera. A pipe company they founded in 1911. Dorelio personally chooses the briar which is left seasoning for at least 4 to 5 years before it is worked. It is stocked in particular baskets which leave the wood always visible and airy. The pieces chosen to become a pipe are cut with a circular saw to identify the model. Then each piece is rough hewn by hand with special files, definitely “dangerous” but very efficacious to give the shape to the wood. Like most artisans, Ardor couples a classical style and a very original style with definite but free and fanciful lines, to offer and meet the largest number of requests, from the simple to the most complex. Ardor is a pipe company which is always looking for innovations, indispensable to collectors, but trying to offer a very high level product in the smoking aspect and performance of the briar, always dried and light for a higher comfort of the smoker. With Damiano, Dorelio’s son, Ardor introduced the coloured methacrylate (acrylic) stems, really appreciated in the international markets. Damiano has been able to condition the Ardor style with new shapes and with a new mouthpieces style, having a modern point of view. His target is to keep up the interest of new generations, surely more variable in a shorter period.
