This COLLECTIBLE BRIAR PIPE is an ULTRA RARE ALGERIAN BRIAR STRAIGHT GRAIN HAND MADE Canadian / Lovart Pipe by an American Master Carver – – – BEN PROTTER!! Dating from the 1950’s, it is a Dunhill Group 3 Size, and a UNIQUE SHAPE complemented by a HAND MADE MOUTHPIECE! It comes from the collection of the old Wilke Pipe shop in NYC, and the pipe is been in storage for nearly 50 years! Comparatively few pipesmokers have ever heard of BEN PROTTER, let alone seen his pipes. Perhaps in part this results from his location in New York City as each region within the United States seems to have its own craftsman whose work was seldom seen outside their immediate area. Their limited production was quickly acquired by local buyers. On the East Coast, one of the great ones was BEN PROTTER!!! He was from NEW YORK CITY and if you asked some of the old-time collectors like Tom Colwell or Herb Wilczak, they typically praised his work! While he has been gone for over 25 years, he left a legacy of great old pipes. BEN PROTTER was born September 13, 1900, and gained experience as a tobacconist in local New York City pipe shops after World War I. He entered the pipe business and began making pipes in the late 1940s. He worked in his home and later in his own shop located in the Brooklyn Section of New York City. Those who knew him described him as a “talented pipe maker” who was always willing to share information (especially passing along pipe making tips and techniques to aspiring pipe makers). He was not an aggressive businessman and was thankful to those who appreciated his work rather than the Dollar bill. He worked with limited tools and fashioned all of his pipes from top-quality Algerian Briar. He never left New York City and was one of the old American Craftsmen who developed a dedicated clientele that kept him busy! His abilities were widely recognized in New York, and many shops clamored for his pipes. Eventually, shops as far away as “The Smoker” in Albany carried Protter Pipes! When BEN PROTTER died in February 1988, Pipeworks and Wilke acquired the balance of his inventory some of which dated back to the 1940s! GORGEOUS FLAME and STRAIGHT GRAIN on the sides of the Bowl, and WIDE BIRDSEYE on the BOTTOM and TOP of the Bowl. The RICH NATURAL SMOOTH Finish accentuates the beauty of the briar and lets the grain dominate the appearance of the Pipe! There are NO chips, dents or scratches to detract from that Finish.
